Herman Miller Vintage Furniture and Design

Herman Miller was founded in 1923 in Zeeland (Michigan, USA) as a furniture manufacturer (originally growing out of the Star Furniture Company established in 1905) and ranks among the most influential American furniture makers of the 20th century. Under design director George Nelson (from 1945) and through long-running collaborations with Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard, Herman Miller established itself as a central maker of the American modernist movement.

The best-known Herman Miller classics come from the Eames collaborations: the Eames Lounge Chair (1956), the Eames Plywood Lounge Chair (LCW, 1945), the Eames fibreglass and aluminium chair series (1950s) and the Eames Aluminum Group (1958). Other central classics include George Nelson's Marshmallow sofa (1956), the Ball Clock series (1947) and the Action Office system (1964, with Robert Propst, the first modular forerunner of the office cubicle), Isamu Noguchi's Noguchi Coffee Table (1944), Alexander Girard's fabric patterns and textile editions, and the Eames Hang-It-All coat rack (1953). Materials include moulded plywood, upholstery, cast aluminium and fibreglass. In 2018 Herman Miller acquired the Danish brand HAY and in 2021 the British Knoll group; today the company trades as MillerKnoll.

On the vintage market, original Herman Miller editions from the 1950s to 70s are especially sought after and tend to trade higher than later licensed editions of the same classics (Vitra produces the same Eames models for the European market). When you examine a piece, look for the branded or embossed Herman Miller logo on the underside of the seat or case (often with a date code), the original aluminium or plywood patina and intact original upholstery or high-quality period-correct reupholstery.
