Many classics in this category date from the 20th century. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand designed the Fauteuil Grand Confort in 1928; Cassina has made it since 1965 as the LC2 and, in a wider version, the LC3. Charles and Ray Eames introduced the Lounge Chair with Ottoman in 1956, produced by Herman Miller for North America and by Vitra for Europe; further chairs by the couple, such as the LCM, are collected under Charles and Ray Eames.

The Barcelona chair was created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the German pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona and is made by Knoll today. What to check on a second hand lounge chair: leather shows cracks and fading first at the seat edge and the armrests, and foam upholstery softens over the years and can be refilled or reupholstered. On frames of chrome plated tubular steel, check the chrome for rust and chips; on moulded wood shells, check the veneer for cracks and the joints to the metal parts. Swivel chairs should turn without play. Licensed originals carry a logo, label or number depending on the manufacturer; if in doubt, ask for a photo of the underside.
