Knoll used and vintage: Tulip, Barcelona and Bertoia classics

Products

Knoll furnished modernism: since 1938 the house has built the designs of Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia and Warren Platner, and they still rank among the best you can buy second-hand.

At 2nd home you will find Knoll used and vintage: Tulip chairs and tables by Eero Saarinen, the Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe, the Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia, chairs and tables of the Platner collection, plus the Breuer classics Wassily and Laccio, which Knoll has produced since acquiring Gavina. Every piece is described with photos of its true condition. For a targeted search, go to the Knoll armchairs; all Breuer designs are at Marcel Breuer.

Which Knoll classics are available used?

The 1956 Tulip chair stands on a single cast aluminium base; Saarinen wanted to end the "slum of legs" under the table. The 1929 Barcelona chair is chromed flat steel with leather cushions. The 1952 Diamond chair is a lattice of bent steel wire. The 1966 Platner pieces are made of hundreds of welded steel rods.

How do you recognise an original?

By the Knoll label under the seat, on the base or on the frame, placed differently depending on model and production period, and by the quality of casting, chrome and leather. What we know about maker and year is stated in every description.

Why buy Knoll used?

Because cast aluminium, steel and leather are built for constant use and a used Knoll classic costs far less than list price. Good originals sell well below the new price and are sought after by collectors; sets, such as four Tulip chairs for a Tulip table, are rare second-hand.
