Vintage lamps and used lights: Louis Poulsen, Flos, Ifö

Products

A used lamp is the fastest way to give a room character: light changes everything, and old designs glow differently from new ones.

At 2nd home you will find more than 200 vintage lamps and used lights from second hand: Danish classics by Louis Poulsen and Nordisk Solar, Italian design by Flos, Swiss precision by Baltensweiler, Swedish ceramic lights by Ifö, plus cascade lamps and floor lamps of the 1960s to 1980s. Every light is described with photos of its true condition. For a targeted search, go to the table lamps, pendant lights and wall lamps.

What should you look for in a used lamp?

At the electrics: old cables and sockets are often brittle, we state the condition for every piece and say whether a light has been rewired. Check the socket for today's bulbs, usually E14 or E27, and that shade and glass are free of cracks. You recognise an original by the maker's label in the shade or on the base.

Which vintage light suits which room?

Above the dining table belongs a pendant with soft downward light, say a PH design by Louis Poulsen. Into the living room a floor lamp with a warm glow, at the desk an adjustable table lamp. The ceramic lights by Ifö are made for kitchen and bathroom, damp-proof and unchanged since the 1960s.

Why buy lamps used?

Because the great designs have been built for fifty years and a used example with patina is often more beautiful than a new one. You pay far less than list price, get a piece with history and keep it in use; lamps of this kind were often meant for constant use.

  • With used lamps, the technology counts alongside the design: check cable, switch and socket: every lamp is described with condition, dimensions and photos, and you can ask about details beforehand. For desks and dressers you will find table lamps, for corners and reading spots floor lamps and above the dining table pendant lights. Shipping is insured.
