Italian lighting manufacturer, founded in 1960 in Milan by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza. Today headquartered in Pregnana Milanese, publicly listed and active worldwide. Artemide is one of the defining names in Italian lighting design since the 1960s.
The early classics grew out of collaborations with Vico Magistretti (Eclisse 1965, Compasso d'Oro 1967, and Dalù 1965), Sergio Mazza, Gae Aulenti and Ettore Sottsass. Richard Sapper designed the Tizio table lamp (1972), one of the best-selling lighting designs ever made. Michele De Lucchi, a central figure of the Memphis group, developed the Tolomeo series together with Giancarlo Fassina in 1987; it went on to become a worldwide standard in office lighting. Other designers include Mario Bellini, Karim Rashid, Issey Miyake (In-Ei 2012), Carlotta de Bevilacqua (Pipe 2003) and BIG. Artemide was also closely tied to the Memphis movement of the 1980s.
On the vintage market, original Eclisse lamps from the 1960s, Tizio originals from the 1970s and 80s and Sottsass pieces from the Memphis era are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped Artemide logo on the base or shade, the model number and the designer's signature. On the Tizio, the original black coating and its distinctive halogen head are decisive; on the Eclisse, it is the intact rotating inner mechanism of the double shade.
