WMF Vintage Furniture and Design

Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) was founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige (Württemberg) as a metalware manufactory and from the end of the 19th century developed into the defining German manufactory for silver-plated and solid silver tableware, household goods and decorative art objects. Between 1900 and 1920, WMF was one of the most important European producers of Art Nouveau silver and brought the Art Nouveau language into middle-class German home culture.

Characteristic are WMF's silver-plated Art Nouveau centrepieces, ashtrays, vases, desk sets and cutlery of the 1900s and 1910s with female, plant and ornamental motifs worked out in relief. In the interwar period WMF produced reduced, Bauhaus-related editions, in the post-war era designer cutlery (above all Wilhelm Wagenfeld editions such as the iconic oil jugs and vinegar and oil bottles) and mid-century coffee and tea services. WMF also developed kitchen tools, coffee machines and industrial glassware that shape the German household range to this day. Since 2016 WMF has been part of the French Groupe SEB.

On the vintage market, original WMF Art Nouveau editions from the 1900s and 1910s are especially sought after (collector prices today often in the high four-digit euro range), above all original silver-plated centrepieces, vases and Wagenfeld editions from the 1930s to 60s. When you examine a piece, look for the struck WMF ostrich mark on the base (with dating code), the struck material marking ("Versilbert", "Hartversilbert", "90", "100" for silver-plating weight) and intact silver plating without worn-through spots.
