Peill & Putzler Vintage Furniture and Design

German glass and lighting manufacturer from Düren in the Rhineland. Its roots reach back to 1903, when Otto Peill founded the Peill glassworks; in 1932 a merger with the Putzler works created the Peill & Putzler brand.

The maker became known in the 1950s and 60s for mouth-blown crystal lights: pendant and table lamps in thick-walled clear glass, often combined with polished brass fittings. The decisive designer was Aloys Ferdinand Gangkofner, who from the late 1950s designed numerous models, among them geometric pendant lamps as well as sphere and globe lights. Peill & Putzler supplied many West German interior-design projects of the post-war modernist era. Production ended in the late 1990s, and individual models have since been reissued under licence.

On the vintage market, the Gangkofner pendant lamps and early crystal-globe hanging lights are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved or stamped “Peill & Putzler” lettering on the fitting or diffuser, and for intact original wiring. Patina on the brass parts is normal and not a defect.
