Mücke-Melder (officially Mücke, Melder & Co.) was a Czechoslovak (formerly Austro-Hungarian) bentwood furniture manufactory in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí (Moravian Silesia, today the Czech Republic), which emerged in the second half of the 19th century and over several generations ranked among the defining European bentwood chair manufactories of the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Mücke-Melder was one of the most important competitors of the Austrian Thonet manufactory and, after the 1920s, was eventually absorbed through several consolidation steps into today's TON (Továrny na ohýbaný nábytek).
Characteristic of Mücke-Melder are precisely crafted steam-bent beech bentwood chairs in the tradition of the Viennese café chair language: light stackable chairs, café armchairs, rocking chairs and office chairs with cane weave or wooden seats, precisely turned legs and the characteristic glued curved construction. Well-known Mücke-Melder models resemble the Thonet classics (No. 14, No. 18) in form and construction, with their own variations and model numbers. Materials are solid steam-bent beech, often with a dark stain or natural wood lacquer, cane weave or plywood seat shells and upholstered seats.
On the vintage market, original Mücke-Melder editions from the period before the TON takeover are especially sought after, above all in original bentwood patina with intact cane weave. When you examine a piece, look for the branded Mücke-Melder stamp on the underside of the seat or on the inner edge of a leg (often with model number and dating code), the characteristic precisely steam-bent beech construction and intact original cane seats without aggressive restoration.
