Second Hand Le Corbusier Armchairs: LC1 to LC4 by Cassina
Four designs from 1928, drawn by Le Corbusier together with Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret, built under licence by Cassina since 1965. That is exactly what makes them interesting second hand: a piece from 1985 is structurally the same as one made today. All four are in this selection, alongside further armchairs from the Cassina programme.
How do you recognise an original?
Cassina pieces carry an embossed serial number and the signature on the frame, on the LC models usually on the tubular steel. Reproductions often use thinner tube diameters and different weld points. For every piece here we have documented what is known about provenance, and where information is missing that is stated too.
Which LC suits you?
The LC1 is the lightest, a frame with a leather seat and a pivoting backrest, good for smaller rooms. The LC2 is the cubic classic with the inserted cushions, the LC3 its larger version. The LC4 is not a seat but a chaise longue, it needs its own place in the room and does not work as an occasional chair.
What does a used LC cost?
The range in this selection runs from around 1,500 euros for an LC1 to over 6,000 euros for rarer pieces. The price depends on condition, upholstery and provenance, not on age alone.
Frequently asked questions and answers
How do I recognise an original Le Corbusier armchair by Cassina?
By the embossed serial number and the signature on the frame. Reproductions usually differ in tube diameter and weld points. What we know about the provenance of a piece is on the product page.
What is the difference between LC1, LC2, LC3 and LC4?
The LC1 is a light frame with a leather seat, the LC2 the cubic armchair with inserted cushions, the LC3 its larger version. The LC4 is not a seat but a chaise longue.
Are all pieces on this page by Le Corbusier?
The great majority yes, the focus is on LC1 to LC4. There are further armchairs from the Cassina programme too, such as the Capitol Complex by Pierre Jeanneret, the Utrecht by Gerrit Rietveld, the CAB 414 by Mario Bellini and the Wink by Toshiyuki Kita. The designer is stated on every product page.
Can I sell my own LC armchair through you?
Yes. The process is explained on our page Sell with us.
What determines the price?
Model, upholstery, condition and provenance. An LC1 with a hide cover sits below an LC3 Grand Confort in black leather. Age alone says little.
How are the armchairs delivered?
Every piece ships immediately. Shipping costs depend on destination and effort and are calculated at checkout.
Can I view an armchair before buying?
That depends on the individual piece. Write to us via Help and contact with the link to the product and we will ask the seller.
What goes with an LC armchair?
The matching LC10 coffee table from the same programme and the Cassina sofas in the same upholstery.
Second Hand Le Corbusier Armchairs: LC1, LC2, LC3 and LC4
-
Le Corbusier armchairs are among the few pieces of furniture where the design of 1928 and today's production yield the same object. Buying used does not mean buying an older model, it means buying the same model with a history.
The four designs
- LC1: frame with a leather seat and a pivoting backrest, the lightest of the series
- LC2: the cubic armchair with inserted cushions
- LC3: the larger, deeper version of the LC2
- LC4: the chaise longue with an adjustable angle
Upholstery in this selection
Alongside classic black leather there are pieces with hide covers in brown, black and blond, plus an LC3 in sand coloured leather and an LC2 in grey and white striped fabric.
More from the programme
Alongside the armchairs you will find the Cassina sofas, the complete Le Corbusier designs and all lounge chairs of our brands.
-
Original or reproduction
The LC models are among the most copied furniture there is. Reliable marks are the embossed serial number, the signature on the frame and the tube diameter of the base. We document per piece what is known and claim nothing we cannot support.
The difference between the LC4 and an armchair
The LC4 is a chaise longue. It needs around 1.60 metres of floor space and a place where it can stand free. If you are looking for an armchair for a reading corner, the LC1 is the better choice.
What to check
- Serial number: embossed, not stuck on.
- Chrome: matt ageing is normal, pitting on the frame is a defect.
- Hide covers: check bare patches on edges and armrests.
- Leather cushions: sagging upholstery needs refilling.
Sustainability
A used LC is a piece of furniture that did not have to be produced again. More on our page about sustainability.
