Second Hand Cassina Sofas: LC2, LC3 and Maralunga

Second Hand Cassina Sofas: three designs that outlasted the rest

Cassina has been building the same sofas for decades, and that is why a used one is a serious alternative to a new one. This selection holds the cubic LC2, LC3 and LC5 from the programme by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret alongside the Maralunga by Vico Magistretti, the sofa with the folding backrest that has been in production since the seventies.

LC2 or LC3, what is the difference?

Both are variants of the same idea: a visible tubular steel frame with the upholstery laid in like cushions. The LC3 is the larger, deeper version, the LC2 the more compact one. If space is tight, take the LC2; if comfort matters most, the LC3.

What defines the Maralunga?

The backrest folds up, turning the flat sofa into a seat with a headrest. In this selection you will find it in green velvet, in black leather and in a striped version.

What to look for in used leather

An even patina is normal on twenty year old leather and often better looking than new stock. Check the seams along the edges and the seat surfaces, that is where a sofa shows first how it was used. Condition, dimensions and signs of use are on every product page.

Frequently asked questions and answers

What is the difference between LC2 and LC3?

Both share the same principle of a visible frame with inserted upholstery. The LC3 is deeper and larger, the LC2 more compact. The exact dimensions are on every product page.

How does the backrest on the Maralunga work?

It folds up and turns the sofa into a seat with a headrest. The mechanism is mechanical, not electric, and should move easily.

Are signs of use on the leather a defect?

An even patina is not, split seams and cracked edges are. We describe both before purchase and show them in the photos.

Can I sell my own Cassina sofa through you?

Yes. How it works is explained on our page Sell with us.

What determines the price?

Model, upholstery, size and condition. An LC3 in sand coloured leather sits above a Maralunga in striped fabric. The range on this page is correspondingly wide.

How is a sofa this size delivered?

Every piece ships immediately. Shipping costs depend on destination and effort and are calculated at checkout.

Can I view the sofa before buying?

That depends on the individual piece. Write to us via Help and contact with the link to the product and we will clarify it with the seller.

What goes with a Cassina sofa?

A coffee table with a quiet form, plus the matching armchairs from the same programme.

  • Cassina sofas from second hand are investment pieces that hold their value because the designs have been in the range unchanged for decades. The selection runs from the compact two seater to the large three seater.

    The designs

    • LC2: the compact variant, in leather and with a chrome frame
    • LC3: the deeper, larger sister of the LC2
    • LC5: the rarely offered sofa variant of the same series
    • Maralunga by Vico Magistretti, with a folding backrest, singly and as an ensemble

    Two or three seater

Both sizes are represented here, the ratio changes with the stock. For a living room under twenty square metres the two seater LC2 is usually the right choice, anything larger takes the LC3 as well.

    More from Cassina

Alongside the sofas you will find the complete Cassina selection, the Le Corbusier designs across all categories and all sofas of our brands.

  • Why used is the more sensible choice

A sofa that has been built unchanged for forty years is the same sofa used. The difference lies in the price and in the fact that no new production was needed. More on our page about sustainability.

    Combining in the room

The LC designs are graphic and need distance from the wall, they look better free in the room than in a corner. The Maralunga is softer and suits almost any interior style, from a mid-century room to a modern interior.

    What to check before buying

    • Leather: an even patina is good, cracked edges are a defect.
    • Chrome frame: matt areas are ageing, pitting is not.
    • Upholstery: sagging cushions need refilling, that is calculable.
    • Maralunga mechanism: the backrest must move easily and without catching.
