Horgenglarus Vintage Furniture and Design

Swiss furniture maker, founded in 1880 in Glarus. One of the oldest furniture companies still operating in Switzerland. Specialised in solid-wood chairs and tables made by hand.

An early hallmark were the tavern and bistro chairs of the 1910s and 20s, supplied to countless Swiss restaurants and cafés. The “classic” model (1918) remains in production to this day. In the modern era, Horgenglarus worked with Swiss architects: Werner Max Moser, Max Ernst Haefeli and Hans Bellmann, and later Jörg Boner and Atelier Oï. Characteristic is the all-through solid-wood construction with hand-crafted joints, often in beech, ash or oak.

On the vintage market, early hospitality chairs from the 1920s and 30s, Moser editions and Bellmann's single-point chair from the 1950s are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the branded Horgenglarus lettering on the underside of the seat, production marks and the original wood patina. These chairs were engineered for decades of use in restaurants and cafés, so signs of wear are not a defect.
