Holmegaard Vintage Furniture and Design

Danish glassworks, founded in 1825 on the Holmegaard moor (Zealand) by Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe. For almost two centuries a central maker of Danish glass design. Today part of the Rosendahl Design Group.

Holmegaard's 20th-century design history is shaped by two generations of designers. Jacob E. Bang, originally trained as an architect, became the first chief designer in 1925 and designed central everyday-glass series (carafes, beer and wine glasses of the functionalist era). Per Lütken followed in 1942 and remained a defining figure for over 50 years, until his death in 1998. Lütken's classics include the Provence bowl (1956), the Carnaby and Atlantis vases of the 1960s and 70s and countless mouth-blown drinking-glass series. In 1962 Otto Brauer designed the Gulvvase floor vase with its distinctive applied neck. Characteristic are soft, organic forms in mouth-blown glass in period-typical colours (smoke grey, honey yellow, aubergine, emerald green).

On the vintage market, Per Lütken originals from the 1950s to 70s are especially sought after, above all the Provence bowl, as is Brauer's Gulvvase. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved Holmegaard logo on the base (often with a date abbreviation), the Lütken signature (an incised L initial with a year) and the colours typical of the period without discolouration or yellowing.
