Italian lighting manufacturer, founded in 1962 in Merano by Dino Gavina, Cesare Cassina and Arturo Eisenkeil as a platform for innovative domestic lighting. Headquartered in Bovezzo (Brescia) since 1974. Flos is a central name in modern Italian lighting design.
From the very beginning, the brand's reputation was shaped by the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, whose Arco (1962, with a marble block and cantilevered steel arm), Toio (1962, built around a repurposed car headlight), Taccia (1962) and Snoopy (1967) became icons of design history. Tobia Scarpa designed Biagio (1968) and Fantasma, while Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù together created the Parentesi pendant lamp (1971). Later generations include Philippe Starck (Miss Sissi, Romeo Moon, Gun), Marcel Wanders (Skygarden), Konstantin Grcic, Patricia Urquiola and Michael Anastassiades. In 1974 Flos absorbed the design collection of Arteluce, including works by Gino Sarfatti.
On the vintage market, early Arco editions from the 1960s are especially sought after, as are first runs of Toio and Parentesi. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped or embossed Flos logo on the shade or base, intact original wiring (including cloth cable) and the original paintwork. On the Arco, the original Carrara marble block is decisive; replicas often use marble of lower quality or different types of stone.
