Embru Vintage Furniture and Design

Swiss furniture maker, founded in 1904 as Embru-Werke AG in Rüti ZH. Originally specialised in steel furniture for hospitals, sanatoriums and schools. In the 1930s Embru put into production furniture designs from Bauhaus-adjacent Swiss modernism, including tubular-steel loungers by Marcel Breuer and chair designs by Werner Max Moser.

The Model 100 lounge chair (Breuer, from 1934) and furniture by the architectural office Haefeli Moser Steiger are among the central pieces. Embru supplied furnishings for Swiss schools, hospitals and administrative buildings of the post-war period. Characteristic are the rational tubular-steel constructions, often with wooden seats, designed to last and to be repaired.

On the vintage market, Breuer loungers and tubular-steel seating from the 1930s to 50s are especially sought after. When you examine an Embru piece, look for the embossed Embru lettering on the frame, stamped component numbers and the original paintwork or galvanising. School chairs from older Swiss stock usually also carry inventory markings.
