e15 Vintage Furniture and Design

e15 was founded in London in 1995 by Philipp Mainzer and Florian Asche as a German-British furniture brand, later relocated to Frankfurt am Main, where the company is still based today. The name e15 refers to the London postcode of the first studio in Newham. e15 shaped German furniture design of the late 1990s and 2000s with a consistent reduction to solid wood and material-conscious construction.

The best-known e15 classic is the Bigfoot dining table (1995) by Philipp Mainzer: a deliberately massive solid wood dining table with characteristically cut, block-like legs in European oak, smoked oak or walnut. The Bigfoot is a design icon of the "new heaviness" of German home culture in the 90s. Further central Mainzer designs are the Backenzahn stool (1996, four solid wooden wedges as a seat element), the Bermuda stool and the Bench seating element. Stefan Diez, Mark Holmes, Ferdinand Kramer (re-editions) and Jasper Morrison also design for e15. Materials are exclusively solid European woods (oak, smoked oak, walnut, ash) in precise joinery production.

On the vintage market, early e15 originals from the late 1990s and 2000s are especially sought after, above all Bigfoot dining tables and Backenzahn stools in original wood patina. When you examine a piece, look for the burned-in e15 brand mark on the underside of the table or seat (with model designation and dating), intact solid wood joints without later gluing and the original surface treatment (oil finish or soap-treated) without aggressive lacquering.
