Cappellini Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian furniture manufactory, founded in 1946 by Enrico Cappellini in Carugo (Como). From the late 1980s, under the leadership of Giulio Cappellini, it became the central platform of the Italian avant-garde. Part of the Haworth group since 2004.

Giulio Cappellini is known for taking young designers into the programme early. Through Cappellini, many careers that are international today achieved their breakthrough: Jasper Morrison (Thinking Man's Chair 1986, Three Sofa De Luxe 1991), Tom Dixon (S-Chair 1991), Marc Newson (Felt Chair 1989, Embryo Chair 1988), Marcel Wanders (Knotted Chair 1996), Nendo, Konstantin Grcic, Patricia Urquiola and the Bouroullec brothers. Characteristic is the mix of conceptual design and industrial production, often with experimental materials (moulded laminated plywood, hardboard, moulded plastic).

On the vintage market, early Cappellini editions from the late 80s and 90s are especially sought after, as many design pieces (Marc Newson's Felt Chair, Tom Dixon's S-Chair) were produced in small runs. When you examine a piece, look for the woven-in or embossed Cappellini label, the model number and the designer signature. Early runs often carry the old Cappellini logo (before 2000).
