C&B Italia Vintage Furniture and Design

C&B Italia was founded in 1966 in Novedrate (Brianza) by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli and Cesare Cassina (the "C&B" stands for Cassina and Busnelli) and ranks among the most defining Italian furniture manufactories of the late 60s, which redefined the seating language of Italian modernism with consistently industrial polyurethane upholstery technology. C&B Italia is the predecessor company of today's B&B Italia: in 1973, after separating from Cassina, Busnelli changed the brand to B&B Italia, and Cassina continued to run the independent company Cassina.

Characteristic of C&B Italia is the early industrial production of large-volume upholstered seating with a cold-foamed polyurethane core (a revolutionary production technology at the time), which enabled radically modern form design. Central C&B Italia classics are the Coronado sofa (Tobia Scarpa, 1966, a low cushion-like upholstered landscape), the Erasmo sofa (Afra and Tobia Scarpa, 1966), the Soriana seating group (Tobia and Afra Scarpa, 1969), the Bocca lip sofa (Studio 65, 1970, a pop lip form after Salvador Dalí/Mae West) and the Le Bambole sofa (Mario Bellini, 1972). Materials are a cold-foamed polyurethane core, precisely worked upholstery fabrics in wool and leather and occasionally a brass-plated steel base.

On the vintage market, original C&B Italia editions from the late 1960s and early 70s are especially sought after and tend to trade higher than later B&B Italia re-editions of the same models. When you examine a piece, look for the sewn-in C&B Italia label on the underlining (with model designation and dating), intact original polyurethane upholstery without decay (early polyurethane foams can become brittle after 50 years) and intact original covers or high-quality faithful reupholstery.
