Vintage Bauhaus Side Tables and Bedside Tables

Products

A Bauhaus side table is usually easy to spot: a frame of bent tubular steel, one or two shelves, no ornament. The Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, moved to Dessau in 1925 and closed in 1933. In Dessau, Marcel Breuer experimented with tubular steel as a new material for furniture. According to Thonet, he designed his B 9 nesting tables in 1925/26, originally for the canteen of the Bauhaus building, and Thonet still makes them today.

At 2nd home this selection brings together Bauhaus side tables and bedside tables from several decades: designs by Marcel Breuer for Thonet, a table by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll, bedside tables by the Czech tubular steel maker Mücke Melder and by Slezák, plus many tables without a known maker. Mies van der Rohe directed the Bauhaus from 1930 until it closed. From France comes the height adjustable E 1027 table by Eileen Gray, made today by ClassiCon. She designed it in 1927 for her house E 1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, reportedly so that her sister could have breakfast in bed. You will find more from the same circle under Bauhaus design and Marcel Breuer.

Typical features are chrome plated or black lacquered tubular steel, tops in wood, glass or Bakelite, open shelves instead of doors, and skids or looped feet. Chrome alone does not make a table Bauhaus, though. Later pieces in the same language are tables in the Bauhaus style, and that is how you should read them.

What to check when buying used: look at the chrome for rust, pitting and flaking, especially at bends, welds and feet. Make sure the frame stands level and does not wobble. Bakelite and lacquered wood often show fine cracks and scratches, glass tops chips along the edges. On bedside tables, check the drawer and its runners, and if you want a pair for the bed, compare the height of both. Dimensions and condition are listed for every piece.
