Alessi Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian manufacturer of household objects and kitchenware, founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi Anghini in Omegna on Lake Orta (Piedmont). Originally specialised in spun and polished metalware, Alessi developed from the 1950s under Carlo Alessi and from the 70s under Alberto Alessi into the "design factory" that worked with international architects and designers.

Groundbreaking was the Tea and Coffee Piazza series (1979/1983), for which Alessi commissioned eleven architects (among them Aldo Rossi, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Charles Jencks, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier) to design coffee and tea sets as object architecture. From this emerged iconic pieces such as the whistling kettle 9093 by Michael Graves (1985, with the bird whistle), the Cupola espresso maker by Aldo Rossi (1990), Richard Sapper's 9090 (1979), Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif lemon squeezer (1990) and the Anna G corkscrew by Alessandro Mendini (1994). Materials are stainless steel, die-cast aluminium, porcelain and, from the 2000s, also plastic. Alessi is central to the Italian postmodernism of the 80s and 90s.

On the vintage market, the original Piazza editions, Sapper 9090 espresso makers and early Graves kettles are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped or engraved Alessi logo (often with a "Made in Italy" addition), the model number and the designer signature. For limited editions, the edition number is decisive.
