Zanotta Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian furniture manufacturer, founded in 1954 by Aurelio Zanotta in Nova Milanese. A central brand of the Italian Radical Design movement of the 1960s and 70s and a champion of experimental furniture by the Milanese avant-garde.

Three pieces define the brand's status: the Sacco seat by Gatti, Paolini and Teodoro (1968), the first beanbag chair in design history and a symbol of the Italian anti-form movement; the Blow sofa by De Pas, D'Urbino, Lomazzi and Scolari (1967), the first serially produced inflatable piece of furniture; and the Mezzadro chair by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1957, in series production from 1971), which combines a tractor seat with a chromed steel stem. Other key designers include Joe Colombo, Marco Zanuso, Bruno Munari, Alessandro Mendini, Alfredo Häberli and Patricia Urquiola.

On the vintage market, early Castiglioni editions (Mezzadro, the Sciangai coat stand), original Saccos from the late 1960s and Blow sofas are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped Zanotta mark on metal parts, fabric labels with the model number and original connecting details. With original Saccos, the original fabric (vinyl in pop colours or Skai) and the original polystyrene bead filling matter; many Saccos on the market have been refilled later.
