Walter Knoll Vintage Furniture and Design

German furniture manufacturer based in Herrenberg, Baden-Württemberg. The roots reach back to 1865, when Wilhelm Knoll founded a leather goods factory in Stuttgart. His son Walter Knoll steered the company towards upholstered furniture from the 1920s and in 1938, together with Hans Knoll, founded what later became Knoll Associates in the USA.

In Germany, the name lived on as an independent brand, focused on high-quality upholstered furniture. Walter Knoll himself designed the 369 armchair in 1956; in 1968, with Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm, came the FK armchairs and FK sofas with chromed steel frames and leather upholstery. From the 2000s, the brand worked with EOOS, PearsonLloyd, Wolfgang C. R. Mezger and Norman Foster. Characteristic are leather lounge furniture with clear lines, often combined with chromed or brushed steel.

On the vintage market, FK editions from the late 60s and 70s are especially sought after, as are lounge chairs from the 60s. When you examine a piece, look for the Walter Knoll label under the upholstery, the stamped dating on the frame and the original stitching of the leather covers.
