Villeroy & Boch Vintage Furniture and Design

Villeroy & Boch was founded in its present form in 1836 through the merger of two older manufactories: the ceramics manufactory founded in 1748 by François Boch in Audun-le-Tiche (Lorraine) and the earthenware manufactory founded in 1791 by Nicolas Villeroy in Wallerfangen. Its headquarters have been in Mettlach on the Saar since 1809. Villeroy & Boch is thus one of the oldest continuously operating European ceramics manufactories and remains linked to the Villeroy and Boch family to this day (owner-led with a listed shareholding).

Characteristic of Villeroy & Boch is its extraordinarily broad product range: tableware (porcelain, earthenware, stoneware), sanitary ceramics (washbasins, toilets, bathtubs), wall and floor tiles, glassware and wellness products. Well-known tableware classics are the Old Luxembourg service (a classic blue and white decor), Mettlach stoneware jugs from the 19th century (often with relief decoration), the Audun series and the French Garden decor, alongside contemporary designer collaborations. Materials are high-fired porcelain, earthenware and stoneware, plus sanitary ceramics with food-safe enamel.

On the vintage market, original Villeroy and Boch editions from the 19th century are especially sought after, above all Mettlach stoneware jugs in original relief decor variants and early Old Luxembourg editions. When you examine a piece, look for the underglaze Mettlach or Villeroy and Boch stamp on the base (often with a dating and model code), the characteristic flawless glaze and intact relief or painted surfaces without aggressive restoration.
