The Togo is one of the best known sofas of French design. Michel Ducaroy, born in 1925 and working with Ligne Roset since 1954, designed it in 1973. The Togo has no frame and no legs: it is made entirely of foam in several densities, covered with a quilted upholstery. That creates the folded, very low shape you recognise at once. Ligne Roset, founded by Antoine Roset in Montagnieu in 1860, still makes the Togo today and counts it among its best sellers.

The family has grown over the years. Today it includes the armchair, also called the fireside chair, the loveseat, the three seater sofa, a corner element and the ottoman. The elements can be combined freely into a seating landscape.

What to look for in a used Togo: check for the Ligne Roset label and ask about its origin, the Togo is often copied. According to Ligne Roset it has only been made in France since 1973, but labels are counterfeited too. So also ask for a receipt and the history of the piece. The cover cannot simply be taken off and washed, replacing it is a job for an upholsterer. So its condition counts twice. On leather look for cracks and dried out areas, on fabric and Alcantara for stains and worn folds. Sit in it or ask whether the foam still gives support or has sagged. Since March 2025 newer pieces carry a QR code as a digital certificate of authenticity, vintage pieces naturally do not.
