Tecno was founded in 1953 by brothers Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985) and Fulgenzio Borsani in Varedo, north of Milan. Tecno is one of the most influential Italian furniture manufacturers of the post-war period and is synonymous with technically sophisticated, modular seating and office furniture with precise mechanics.

Early key products include Osvaldo Borsani's classics, the D70 sofa (1954) and the P40 chaise longue (1954): both featuring patented multi-position mechanisms that allow the respective furniture to be adjusted from reclined to upright. Numerous desk and conference table systems followed (T22 table, Praesidium, T96), which significantly shaped the Italian office furniture industry in the 60s and 70s. Eugenio Gerli, Vico Magistretti, Norman Foster, Gae Aulenti, and Piero Lissoni also designed for Tecno. The brand was acquired by the Coima Group in 2014 and continues to produce Borsani classics and new office and hospitality solutions.

In the vintage market, Borsani's P40 chaises longues, D70 sofas, and early Tecno desks from the 1950s to 70s are particularly sought after. When inspecting a piece, look for the embossed Tecno metal plate on the seat frame or base (with model and serial number), intact original mechanisms for the adjustment functions without play or damage, and original upholstery or a high-quality re-upholstery with period-appropriate wool bouclé fabrics.
