Stelton Vintage Furniture and Design

Danish design manufactory for hollowware and table objects, founded in Copenhagen in 1960. Stelton stands for clearly designed stainless steel hollowware in the Danish modern design tradition.

The international breakthrough came in 1967 with Arne Jacobsen's Cylinda Line: a complete service of cylindrical hollowware elements (coffee pot, teapot, creamer, sugar bowl, ashtray, cocktail shaker), originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and produced in series at Stelton from 1967. In 1977 Erik Magnussen designed the EM77 vacuum jug with its characteristic beak spout and rocker stopper, one of the most defining design objects of the Danish post-war era (Compasso d'Oro 1979). Further designers are Holmbäck Nordentoft, Daniel Debiasi and Federico Sandri, Norm Architects and Jakob Wagner. Materials are primarily stainless steel, later complemented by plastic, glass and wood.

On the vintage market, original Cylinda Line sets from the late 60s and 70s are especially sought after, as are early EM77 vacuum jugs with the original stopper. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed Stelton marking on the base (often with "Stainless 18/8" and a Made in Denmark addition), the model number and the designer signature. With the EM77, the intact rocker stopper mechanism (clear closing movement) and the undamaged ABS shell are decisive.
