Sèvres Vintage Furniture and Design

The Manufacture nationale de Sèvres was founded in Vincennes in 1740 as a royal porcelain manufactory and moved to Sèvres near Paris in 1756. It ranks among the most prestigious porcelain manufactories in European history and remains a French state institution to this day, administered by the French Ministry of Culture.

Characteristic of Sèvres are hand-painted finest hard-paste porcelain (from 1768) and the earlier soft-paste porcelain (before 1768), often with iconic ground colours such as the "Bleu de Sèvres" (royal blue, 1756), the "Rose Pompadour" (pink, named after Madame de Pompadour) and the "Vert Foncé" (dark green). Well-known Sèvres classics are elaborately hand-painted services for the French royal courts and for international diplomatic gifts, central historical editions such as the service for Marie-Antoinette and Napoleonic commissions, as well as contemporary collaborations with Pierre Soulages, Ettore Sottsass, Louise Bourgeois, Andrea Branzi and Pierre Charpin.

On the vintage market, original Sèvres editions from the 18th and 19th centuries are especially sought after (with correspondingly high price levels), above all pieces with documentable historical provenance. When you examine a piece, look for the underglaze blue crossed-L mark (for King Louis XV) on the base and the stamped letter dating code (A for 1753, B for 1754, etc.), the hand-painted decoration with a recognisable brush signature and intact porcelain without restorations or glued seams.
