Danish porcelain manufactory, founded in 1775 in Copenhagen under Queen Dowager Juliane Marie. One of the oldest porcelain manufactories in Europe still in production. Part of the Fiskars group since 2013.

The manufactory is known for two central tableware series: Musselmalet (Blue Fluted), dating from the founding year 1775, with hand-painted cobalt blue decoration on white porcelain, and Flora Danica (from 1790), one of the most elaborate porcelain services ever made, with over 3,000 hand-painted botanical motifs from the botanical work Flora Danica. Both lines are still hand-painted in Copenhagen today. From 1885, Arnold Krog led the manufactory into the modern era (underglaze painting, Art Nouveau motifs). Later designers included Gertrud Vasegaard, Grethe Meyer, Henning Koppel, Knud Holscher and Ole Jensen. Characteristic features are the stamped wave mark (three wavy lines referring to the three Danish straits) and the dating strokes beneath the glaze.

On the vintage market, early Flora Danica pieces, Musselmalet pieces with the characteristic dating strokes and Koppel services are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the three wave lines and the correct number of dating strokes beneath the wave mark; they reveal the decade of production.
