Rosenthal Vintage Furniture and Design

Rosenthal was founded in 1879 in Selb (Upper Franconia, Bavaria) by Philipp Rosenthal and ranks among the defining German porcelain manufactories of the 20th century. Philipp Rosenthal established the brand early on as a design-driven manufactory that engaged leading international designers and artists for tableware and decorative porcelain, bringing German porcelain into the contemporary design conversation.

Rosenthal's best-known contribution is the "Studio-Linie" ("Rosenthal Studio-Linie"), founded in 1961: Philipp Rosenthal Junior opened the manufactory decisively to international design modernism and initiated collaborations with Walter Gropius (TAC service, 1969), Tapio Wirkkala (Composition service 1958, Pollo vases), Bjørn Wiinblad (Romanze service with its characteristic oriental motifs), Timo Sarpaneva, Jasper Morrison, Andy Warhol (artist editions), Salvador Dalí and, more recently, Patricia Urquiola, Nendo and Jaime Hayón. Alongside this, Rosenthal produces classic tableware both in-house and under licence. Rosenthal has been part of the Sambonet Paderno group (today the Arcturus group) since 2009.

On the vintage market, original Studio-Linie editions from the 1960s to the 1980s are especially sought after, above all the TAC Gropius service, Wirkkala's Pollo vases and limited artist editions. When you examine a piece, look for the underglaze Rosenthal stamp on the base (often with a "Rosenthal Studio-Linie" addition and the designer's signature), the characteristic flawless glaze and intact hand-painted decoration or relief work without abrasion.
