Raak Vintage Furniture and Design

Raak Amsterdam was founded in Amsterdam in 1954 by Carel Holtkamp and ranks among the most defining Dutch lighting manufactories of the mid-century and space-age era. Over 25 years of production, Raak established itself as the central Dutch manufactory for sculptural pendant and ceiling lamps with a characteristically reduced mid-century language. Production ceased in 1979; Raak editions have since been available exclusively on the vintage market.

Characteristic of Raak are sculptural pendant, ceiling and wall lamps in brass-plated steel, opaque white or amber pressed glass and mouth-blown glass spheres, which attracted international attention with their reduced mid-century and space-age form design. Well-known Raak classics are the cascade pendant lamps (model C1521 "Cascade"), the Sputnik pendant lamps in brass with pressed glass spheres, the "Polaris" ceiling lamp (Frank Ligtelijn) and numerous pendant editions by designers such as Maija Liisa Komulainen, Frank Ligtelijn, Nanny Still McKinney and Maurice Schuurman. Materials are brass-plated steel with pressed glass or mouth-blown glass shades and, in some editions, acrylic glass inserts.

On the vintage market, original Raak editions from the 1960s and 70s are especially sought after, above all cascade and Sputnik pendant lamps in original brass patina. When you examine a piece, look for the punched or stamped Raak Amsterdam logo on the pendant connection base or the inner rim of the shade (often with a model designation such as "C1521" and dating), the characteristic precise brass workmanship and intact original wiring and pressed glass shades without cracks.
