Italian upholstered furniture manufactory, founded in 1912 by Renzo Frau in Turin. Specialised in high-end leather furniture made by hand. Part of the Haworth group since 2014.

The company's hallmark is its use of full-grain Pelle Frau leather, produced in tanning and dyeing processes that take several weeks. Its best-known classic is the Vanity Fair armchair (model 904, originally launched in 1930 as the "Lyra"), one of the most defining leather armchair shapes in Italian design history. Other central pieces are the Chester One armchair and the Archibald armchair by Jean-Marie Massaud (2009). Designer collaborations include Pierluigi Cerri, Lella and Massimo Vignelli, Roberto Lazzeroni and Patricia Urquiola. Poltrona Frau also supplied the leather interiors for spaces such as the Italian Parliament, the La Scala theatre and numerous Italian sports car interiors (Ferrari, Maserati).

On the vintage market, Vanity Fair armchairs from the 50s to the 70s are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed Pelle Frau crest beneath the seat cushion or on the back frame, along with the model number and production stamp. Original Pelle Frau leather develops a characteristic dark, lustrous patina over the years.
