Orrefors Vintage Furniture and Design

Swedish glassworks, founded in 1898 in the village of Orrefors (Småland). One of the defining glass manufacturers of Scandinavia, internationally known for the glass techniques developed in Sweden, Graal (1916) and Ariel (1936). Today part of the Fiskars group.

From the 1910s onwards Orrefors established itself as a design-glass manufacturer, when Simon Gate and Edward Hald joined the company and helped develop the Graal technique (coloured glass patterns enclosed between several layers of glass). Sven Palmqvist developed the Ravenna (1948) and Fuga techniques, and Ingeborg Lundin created the iconic Äpple vase (1957, a clear glass vase in the shape of an apple). Other central designers are Edvin Öhrström (the Ariel technique, together with Vicke Lindstrand), Erika Lagerbielke, Olle Alberius, Nils Landberg and Lena Bergström. Characteristic are clear blown design glasses and colour-enclosed art glasses of the highest craftsmanship.

On the vintage market, early Gate, Hald, Palmqvist and Lundin originals are especially sought after, above all the Äpple vase, Ravenna bowls and early Graal pieces. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved Orrefors signature (often with a designer initial and a year); on Ariel and Graal pieces, look for the numbered edition detail and the intact base signature (S for Sven Palmqvist, IL for Ingeborg Lundin, EÖ for Öhrström).
