Oluce Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian lighting manufacturer, founded in Milan in 1945 by Giuseppe Ostuni. One of the oldest Italian lighting companies still active. Today based in San Giuliano Milanese.

Oluce is closely tied to the great Italian lighting designers of the post-war era. Vico Magistretti designed the Atollo table lamp (1977, a cylindrical base with a hemispherical shade), which received the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and became one of the best-known table lamps in Italian design history. Further Magistretti classics are Snow (1973), Sonora and Lyndon. Joe Colombo designed Coupe (1967, curved tubular steel arms with a hemispherical reflector) and the Spider series (1965, one of the first directional pivoting reading lamps). Further designers include Marco Romanelli, Hannes Wettstein and Bruno Gecchelin. Materials are mostly aluminium, lacquered steel, glass and marble.

On the vintage market, early Atollo editions from the late 70s and 80s are especially sought after (in black, white and Murano glass versions), as are Coupe and Spider originals from the late 60s. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped Oluce logo on the base, the model number and the designer signature. With Atollo, the intact matt-lacquered or glass hemisphere without scratches is decisive, with Spider the original pivoting mechanism with an intact ball joint.
