Muuto was founded in Copenhagen in 2006 by Peter Bonnén and Kristian Byrge. The name derives from the Finnish word "muutos" (change). Muuto positioned itself as a contemporary Danish furniture brand with the declared vision of translating the Scandinavian design heritage into a new, young design language of the present, without falling into pure re-edition nostalgia.

Central Muuto designs come from Thomas Bentzen (Around coffee table series, Fiber chair, Ridge pendant), TAF Studio (Compile shelving system, Workshop chair), Cecilie Manz (Halves side table), Iskos-Berlin (Outline sofa), Mika Tolvanen (Visu chair), Anderssen & Voll (Ambit pendant) and Sam Hecht and Kim Colin (Industrial Facility). Materials are oak, ash and beech wood, injection-moulded plastic, powder-coated steel and high-quality covers in the characteristically muted Muuto colour palettes. In 2017 Muuto was taken over by Herman Miller (today MillerKnoll) and continues to operate under its own brand, based in Copenhagen.

On the vintage market, early Muuto pieces from the late 2000s and 2010s are especially sought after, above all Bentzen classics and pieces in discontinued colour or material variants. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed or stamped Muuto logo on the underside of the seat or base, the workshop label with model designation and production date and intact surfaces without UV yellowing.
