Mono Teak: Vintage and Used Teak Furniture
-
Mono Teak stands for Danish-influenced teak furniture with oiled surfaces, slim frames and generous storage behind very little material. The pieces are spread across Sideboards, Chests of drawers and Shelving, joined by chairs, armchairs and small wall-mounted objects.
How to recognise good teak
- Solid edges instead of glued-on veneer strips
- Dovetail or mortise joints at the corners of the carcass
- An even, silky surface with no film of lacquer
- Handles and feet in the same wood, not in a substitute
Why teak lasts so long
Teak carries its own oils, which protect the wood against moisture from the inside. That is why Danish furniture from the fifties to the seventies survives six decades of daily use without cracking. Small scratches disappear almost completely once you sand them back and re-oil.
-
Sustainability: wood that already exists
Teak grows slowly, and the old plantation stocks are finite. Keeping a second-hand sideboard in use is therefore not only the cheaper choice but the only one that costs no new tropical timber. The condition is usually better than that of today's mass production.
How to combine teak
Warm teak takes cool company well: white plaster, steel, linen, a coarse Berber rug. Do not centre a sideboard on the wall, leave air to the left and right and the slim silhouette starts to work. Brass and smoked glass tip the look towards the elegant, basketwork and ceramics towards the calm.
What the experts look for
- Veneer on the top and edges: blisters are hard to rescue
- Wooden drawer runners, cleanly guided and not worn out
- An original back panel, screwed rather than freshly stapled
- Colour differences between front and sides point to sun damage

Frequently asked questions and answers
How do I recognise real teak?
Teak has a dense, oily grain in warm golden brown that darkens over the years. On the cut surface you can see fine dark lines, and the surface feels slightly waxy. The condition of every piece is documented with photos on its product page.
Why are used teak pieces worth it?
Old teak usually comes from slow-grown timber and is denser than what is produced today. Used pieces are fully seasoned, so they barely warp any more, and they cost considerably less than comparable new furniture.
How do I care for teak properly?
Wipe the wood with a slightly damp cloth and dry it afterwards. Teak oil once or twice a year is enough to keep the tone warm. Avoid abrasive cleaners and do not place teak directly next to a radiator.
Are these pieces vintage or used?
Both. Vintage means pieces from roughly 20 years old with a design language of their own, used simply means previously owned. Age, condition and origin are listed with every item.
Can I sell my own teak furniture through you?
Yes. You can submit pieces through our Sell page. We check condition and demand and come back to you with an assessment.
How is teak furniture delivered?
Larger pieces travel by forwarding agent to the address you choose, smaller ones go by parcel service. The shipping price is shown on the product page before you order.
Can I view the furniture before buying?
That depends on the seller. Our pieces are located with dealers and private sellers in different places. Just ask us and we will find out whether a viewing is possible.
What goes well with teak furniture?
Teak works particularly well with linen, rattan and brass. Have a look at our rugs and decoration, they round off a room with teak quickly.
