Magis Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian furniture maker based in Motta di Livenza (Treviso), founded in 1976 by Eugenio Perazza. Magis stands for the combination of industrial production technologies with a contemporary designer portfolio, often in plastic, die-cast aluminium and wood.

Eugenio Perazza and his son Alberto built up a designer programme that gained international visibility from the 1990s onwards. Central pieces include Jasper Morrison's Air-Chair (2000, injection-moulded polypropylene), Konstantin Grcic's Chair One (2003, die-cast aluminium), Stefano Giovannoni's Bombo stool (1997) and the Magis Bird series (Magis Pup, 2005), Thomas Heatherwick's Spun chair (2007) and Eero Aarnio's Puppy chair series for children. Other designers include Naoto Fukasawa, Ron Arad, Marc Newson, Tom Vac and Marcel Wanders. With its “me too” line, Magis makes furniture specifically for children.

On the vintage market, early first-run editions are especially sought after, above all Chair One in the original colours (red, green, white) and first-production Air-Chairs. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed Magis logo under the seat or base, the model number and the designer's signature. On die-cast aluminium pieces the powder coating is decisive; on polypropylene, check that no micro-scratches spoil the look.
