Lyfa Vintage Furniture and Design

Lyfa (short for "Lysarmaturfabrik", lighting fixture factory) was founded in Copenhagen in 1907 and is one of the oldest Danish lighting manufactories of the 20th century. Over seven decades, Lyfa shaped Danish lighting design with high-quality desk, pendant and floor lamps and worked with the defining Danish lighting designers of the mid-century era.

Lyfa's central designer collaborations are Bent Karlby (desk, floor and pendant lamps of the 50s and 60s, often with characteristic shades in lacquered metal), Hans Bergstrøm (Scandinavian mid-century classics) and Simon P. Henningsen. Characteristic are Lyfa's table lamps with perforated or rear-lacquered metal shades, clear desk lamp architecture in lacquered aluminium and pendant lamps in a Scandinavian, reduced form language. Lyfa was taken over by Louis Poulsen in 1980; some of the classics have since been produced further under the Poulsen label or discontinued.

On the vintage market, Lyfa originals from the 1950s to 70s are especially sought after, above all Bent Karlby table and desk lamps in the characteristic original lacquers. When you examine a piece, look for the punched or stamped Lyfa logo on the ceiling canopy or base (often with a model number), intact original lacquer on the metal shades and the period-typical original wiring with textile or rubber cable.
