Luceplan Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian lighting manufacturer, founded in Milan in 1978 by Riccardo Sarfatti, Sandra Severi Sarfatti and Paolo Rizzatto. Riccardo Sarfatti is the son of Gino Sarfatti, founder of the legendary Milanese lighting company Arteluce. Since 2011 Luceplan has been part of the Philips group.

Characteristic is the close bond between design and engineering: many classics emerged from the collaboration of Paolo Rizzatto with the engineer and designer Alberto Meda. Central pieces are Berenice (1985, a delicate desk lamp in die-cast aluminium), Costanza (1986, a floor lamp with a polycarbonate shade and slender stem), Titania (1989, a pendant lamp with movable aluminium blades) and the Lola floor lamp (1987). Further designers include Sebastian Bergne, Francisco Gomez Paz, Daniel Rybakken and Ross Lovegrove (Mix). Luceplan has won the Compasso d'Oro several times.

On the vintage market, early Berenice and Costanza editions from the late 80s and 90s are especially sought after, as is Titania with its original coloured blades. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped Luceplan logo on the base, the model number and the designer signature. With Costanza, the original polycarbonate shade surface is decisive (no clouding), with Titania the intact coloured aluminium blades without deformation.
