Kosta Boda Vintage Furniture and Design

Swedish glassworks, born from the merger of Kosta (founded in 1742, Sweden's oldest glassworks) and Boda (founded in 1864). In 1971 the two houses joined to form Kosta Boda Glasbruk. Today part of the Fiskars group (via Orrefors Kosta Boda).

Unlike Orrefors, which stands for clear elegance and blown art glass, Kosta Boda is known for colourful, expressive studio glass with an artisanal, artistic signature. Central designers were and are Vicke Lindstrand (artistic director at Kosta from 1950), Erik Höglund (a central figure of the Swedish studio glass movement of the 50s and 60s, with characteristic face and animal motifs in bubble glass), Bertil Vallien (a defining figure since 1963, known for sand-cast sculptures such as Boats and Heads as well as atelier vases), Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Anna Ehrner and Göran Wärff. Materials are mouth-blown glass with enclosed colour tones, bubbles and expressive cutting and sand-casting techniques.

On the vintage market, Erik Höglund originals from the 50s and 60s, Bertil Vallien's sand-cast sculptures and early Lindstrand pieces are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved or wheel-engraved Kosta Boda signature, designer initials and edition or year marking. For limited editions, the numbered signature (often with the edition size) is decisive.
