Iittala Vintage Furniture and Design

Finnish glass and tableware manufacturer, founded in 1881 in the Finnish village of Iittala (municipality of Hämeenlinna). Over the course of the 1930s Iittala became one of the defining brands of modern Finnish design and is today a central part of the Fiskars group.

Iittala's collection is shaped by the great names of Finnish design history. In 1932 Aino Aalto designed the concentrically ribbed pressed-glass tumblers and carafes named after her (originally for Karhula, later continued under Iittala). Alvar Aalto designed the organically shaped Savoy vase (1936). Kaj Franck shaped Finnish everyday culture with the Teema tableware series (1952) and the Kartio glasses (1958). Tapio Wirkkala designed the ice-textured Ultima Thule glasses (1968), Timo Sarpaneva the Festivo candlesticks (1966) and the i-line (1956). Oiva Toikka's Birds glass figures round off the collector's collection. Materials are above all clear and coloured pressed glass, mouth-blown glass and porcelain.

On the vintage market, early Wirkkala and Sarpaneva editions from the 1960s and 70s are especially sought after, as are Aino Aalto pressed glasses and old Teema runs in rare colours. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved or printed Iittala mark on the base (with a date mark or designer's signature); on mouth-blown pieces, look for the glassmaker's mark and intact edges.
