Hutschenreuther Vintage Furniture and Design

Hutschenreuther was founded in 1814 in Hohenberg an der Eger (Upper Franconia/Bavaria) by Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther and is one of the defining German porcelain manufactories of the 19th and 20th centuries. Hutschenreuther was a pioneer among privately owned porcelain manufactories in a German market then dominated by royal state manufactories and developed into the largest porcelain manufactory in Bavaria.

Characteristic are Hutschenreuther's hand-painted white hard-paste porcelain in a classicist and Biedermeier form language, with elaborate underglaze and overglaze painting, gold rim editions and figurative porcelain sculptures. Well-known Hutschenreuther classics are hand-painted dinner and coffee services in classicist and Biedermeier form language, gold rim editions and figurative porcelain sculptures (above all the animal figure series by Hans Achtziger from the 1930s to the 60s). In 1969 Hutschenreuther merged with the porcelain factory Selb-Plößberg-Tirschenreuth; today the brand belongs to the Rosenthal Sambonet group.

On the vintage market, original Hutschenreuther editions from the 19th century and the mid-century era are especially sought after, above all hand-painted services and limited figurative porcelain sculptures. When you examine a piece, look for the underglaze stamped Hutschenreuther mark on the base (often with a dating or manufactory code), the characteristic flawless glaze without stress cracks and intact hand-painted decoration and gold rims without abrasion.
