HAY Vintage Furniture and Design

HAY was founded in 2002 in Copenhagen by Mette and Rolf Hay together with Troels Holch Povlsen and is today one of the internationally most successful contemporary Scandinavian furniture brands. From the outset, HAY has aimed at affordable, high-quality contemporary design, thereby establishing a new generation of Danish living culture beyond the classic mid-century legacy.

HAY works with internationally leading designers. Central pieces include the About A Chair series (Hee Welling, from 2010, a modular seat-shell programme with interchangeable bases, now a standard seating range worldwide), the Palissade outdoor programme (Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, from 2016), the J104 and J77 chair re-editions (Jørgen Bækmark), the Tray table system and numerous accessories by Stefan Diez, Inga Sempé, Doshi Levien and Big-Game. In 2018 HAY was taken over by a majority stake from Herman Miller (today MillerKnoll), but continues to operate under its own brand and with the founding couple at the helm.

On the vintage market, early HAY editions from the 2000s and 2010s are especially sought after, above all in discontinued colour or material variants of the About A Chair series and Hee Welling classics. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed or stamped HAY logo on the underside of the seat, intact lacquer and plastic surfaces without UV yellowing, and the original workshop label with model name.
