Gubi was founded in Copenhagen in 1967 by Gubi Olsen and Lisbeth Brorbøl as a small furniture workshop and, from the mid-2000s under Sebastian Holmbäck, transformed into one of the defining international Scandinavian furniture brands of the present day. Gubi's business model combines carefully researched authorised re-editions of historical design classics with designs by contemporary designers.

Among its re-editions, Gubi reconstructed Greta Magnusson Grossman classics (the Grasshopper floor lamp, the Gräshoppa floor lamp and the Cobra table lamp, from 2002), Mathieu Matégot furniture, Pierre Paulin (the Pacha lounge chair) and Joe Colombo (Multilamp). The contemporary line includes central pieces by GamFratesi (Beetle chair 2013, Bat chair, Stay armchair), Space Copenhagen (Dwell chair, Adnet mirror re-edition), Sebastian Herkner and Atelier Bourgeois Boheme. Materials are solid oak, ash and walnut, powder-coated steel and velour and leather covers in often earthy, muted colour palettes.

On the vintage market, early Gubi re-editions from the late 2000s and 2010s are especially sought after, above all first-run Greta Magnusson Grossman classics and GamFratesi Beetle chair editions. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed or punched Gubi logo on the underside of the seat or base, the workshop label with model designation and production date and intact upholstery or lacquer surfaces.
