Georg Jensen Vintage Furniture and Design

Danish silversmithy, founded in Copenhagen in 1904 by Georg Jensen (1866-1935). One of the most defining Scandinavian silver manufactories for jewellery, cutlery and hollowware. Today part of the Fiskars group.

Georg Jensen himself, trained as a goldsmith and sculptor, shaped the manufactory over three decades with jewellery and hollowware in the Skonvirke style (Danish Art Nouveau) and later in functionalism. After his death in 1935, the design work passed to a series of central designers: Johan Rohde (Acanthus cutlery 1915), Henning Koppel (Pitcher 992 from 1952, one of the most defining silver jugs of the 20th century, as well as 980 silver cutlery), Sigvard Bernadotte (Swedish prince and industrial designer), Arne Jacobsen (Cylinda Line hollowware 1967, commercially produced for Stelton), Nanna Ditzel and Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe (Bangle Watch 1962, in cooperation with Pierre Cardin). Characteristic is the 925 sterling silver with the struck hallmark (the Georg Jensen logo in an oval) and the model number.

On the vintage market, early Georg Jensen originals (before 1935), Koppel hollowware and Acanthus cutlery editions are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the struck Georg Jensen hallmark (different versions depending on the production period), the model number, designer initials and the "Sterling Denmark" stamp. With vintage jewellery, the dating hallmark (dot symbols) is often decisive.
