Gavina Vintage Furniture and Design

Gavina was founded in Bologna in 1960 by Dino Gavina (1922-2007) and, as a visionary publisher and producer, shaped post-war Italian design history far beyond its own furniture. Gavina was patron, theorist and industrialist in one person and brought central classics of Bauhaus and Italian modernism to market in authorised re-editions.

Gavina's best-known contribution is the first authorised re-edition of Marcel Breuer's Wassily chair (model B3, 1925/1962): Gavina contacted Breuer personally and brought the forgotten cantilever-frame chair back to market as the "Wassily" (after Wassily Kandinsky): the re-edition gave the Bauhaus classic its present name. Gavina also edited Breuer's Cesca chair and Mart Stam classics, and produced central pieces by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Tobia and Afra Scarpa, Carlo Scarpa and Kazuhide Takahama. Gavina was also co-founder of the lighting manufactory Flos (1962, with Castiglioni and Scarpa) and the brand Simon (1966). In 1968 Gavina was taken over by Knoll International.

On the vintage market, original Gavina editions from the 1960s are especially sought after and achieve clearly higher prices than later Knoll or other licensed editions of the same classics, above all Wassily chairs, Cesca chairs and Tobia Scarpa seating. When you examine a piece, look for the stamped or punched Gavina logo (often on the tubular steel or the underside of the seat), the original chrome plating of the tubular steel construction and the original workshop label with the Bologna address.
