Fontana Arte Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian lighting and glass manufactory, founded in Milan in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa as a spin-off of the glass company Luigi Fontana. Fontana Arte combines the Milanese design tradition with artisanal glasswork and ranks among the defining Italian lighting brands of the 20th century.

Important classics emerged in the first decades: Pietro Chiesa's Luminator (1933, one of the first floor lamps with indirect light), the Fontana table lamp (Max Ingrand 1954, with its characteristic blown glass shade), the Pirellone floor lamp (Gio Ponti 1957) and numerous pendant lamps by Max Ingrand. Gae Aulenti took over the artistic direction in 1979; her own table lamps and centrepieces emerged in this phase. Further designers include Vico Magistretti, Daniela Puppa, Renzo Piano, Carlo Forcolini, Massimo Iosa Ghini and Patrick Norguet. Characteristic are mouth-blown and machine-finished glasses combined with brass, steel and marble elements.

On the vintage market, early Ingrand pieces from the 50s (the Fontana table lamp) and Chiesa's Luminator are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the engraved FontanaArte logo (often on the base or glass body), the model number and the dating stamp. With mouth-blown glasses, the glassmaker's original inscription or a workshop stamp is a central mark of authenticity.
