FDB Møbler Vintage Furniture and Design

FDB Møbler was founded in Denmark in 1942 as the furniture line of the FDB (Fællesforeningen for Danmarks Brugsforeninger, the Danish consumer co-operative association), with the declared aim of making high-quality modern design available to broad sections of the population at prices achievable in production. FDB Møbler is thus one of the earliest consistent realisations of democratic design in Danish furniture history and shaped Danish home culture over several decades.

The best-known FDB classic is the J39 Folkestolen/Peoples Chair by Børge Mogensen (1947): a solid beech chair with its characteristic woven paper cord seat, which over decades became the standard seating of Danish households. Other central pieces are the J46 armchair (Poul M. Volther 1956), the J52 (Ejvind Johansson 1962), the J104 and J77 chairs (Jørgen Bækmark) and numerous dining tables and sideboards. FDB Møbler production paused for a time; since 2013 the classics have been re-issued in authorised editions and are additionally produced under licence by HAY. Materials are solid beech, oak and walnut, combined with paper cord or fabric covers.

On the vintage market, original FDB editions from the 1940s to the 70s are especially sought after, above all early J39 chairs with the original paper cord seat and Mogensen sideboards. When you examine a piece, look for the burned-in FDB brand mark beneath the seat or on the underside of the body, intact paper cord weaving or a high-quality re-weave in the same material and historical wood patina without staining.
