Driade Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian furniture manufactory, founded in 1968 in Fossadello near Caorso (Piacenza) by Enrico Astori, his sister Antonia Astori and Adelaide Acerbi. Driade developed into the platform for eclectic, often postmodern Italian design, shaped by close designer collaborations over several decades.

Central designers are Antonia Astori (Aforismi modular system 1968), Philippe Starck (Costes chair 1982, Lord Yo, Olly Tango, Pip-e), Borek Sipek (Sebastian armchair 1985), Konstantin Grcic, Patricia Urquiola, Naoto Fukasawa, Tokujin Yoshioka and Olaf Eliasson. Driade also ran the sub-label Driade Kosmo for Japanese and conceptual designers. Since the 2010s, Driade has belonged to the Italmobiliare group. Characteristic are fully choreographed designer collections, often with the pronounced formal signature of individual designers and a material mix of wood, steel, plastic and leather.

On the vintage market, early Antonia Astori furniture from the late 60s and 70s, early Starck runs from the 80s (Costes, Pat Conley) and Sipek's Sebastian armchair are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the burned-in or stamped Driade logo on the base, the designer signature and the model number. With Starck Costes chairs, the burned-in Driade brand mark under the seat is decisive; later reissues under licence carry different markings.
