De Padova Vintage Furniture and Design

De Padova was founded in Milan in 1956 by Maddalena De Padova (1928-2016) and Fernando De Padova. The company started as an importer of high-quality Scandinavian and American design furniture (Knoll, Herman Miller, Tapiovaara, Wegner), bringing international design modernism into the Italian home culture conversation for the first time.

From the 1960s, De Padova developed its own furniture production under the artistic direction of Vico Magistretti (1920-2006), who over four decades became the most important De Padova designer. Magistretti's best-known De Padova classics are the Vidun table (1987) with its height-adjustable screw mechanism, the Silver chair (1989), the Louisiana sofa (1993) and the Cornaro desk programme. Achille Castiglioni, Patricia Urquiola and contemporary designers also designed for De Padova. In 2015 the company was taken over by the Boffi group and has since traded as Boffi De Padova.

On the vintage market, Magistretti's Vidun tables and Silver chairs from the late 80s and 90s are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the burned-in or punched De Padova logo on the underside of the seat or table, the original model number and intact wood and upholstery surfaces without aggressive restoration.
