Daum Nancy Vintage Furniture and Design

Daum was founded in Nancy (Lorraine) in 1878 by Jean Daum and ranks among the defining French glass manufactories of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. Under the brothers Auguste and Antonin Daum, the company developed from the end of the 19th century into the leading glass manufactory of the École de Nancy, the art movement of the French Art Nouveau scene around Émile Gallé and Louis Majorelle.

Characteristic of Daum's early phase are elaborately decorated multi-layered glass vases and lamps in pâte-de-verre technique (pressed, fused glass powder), combined with acid etching, enamel painting and gilded accents. Well-known motifs are floral and landscape depictions (thistles, mushrooms, marsh landscapes). In the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 30s, Daum developed more reduced geometric editions under Paul Daum and, after 1945, the high-quality pâte-de-cristal vases and sculptures with contemporary artists such as Salvador Dalí, César and Hilton McConnico. Daum still produces at the Nancy site today.

On the vintage market, original Daum Frères editions from the Art Nouveau era (before 1914) and the Art Deco era (1920s-30s) are especially sought after and carry the signed marks "Daum Nancy" (with the Cross of Lorraine) or "Daum France". When you examine a piece, look for the engraved or etched signature (often with the Cross of Lorraine), the characteristic multi-layered pâte-de-verre or cameo glass construction and intact enamel and gilding accents without restoration.
