Danish furniture manufactory, founded in Odense in 1908 by Carl Hansen. A family business, today in its fourth generation. Specialised in solid wood chairs made by hand.

The breakthrough came in 1949 with the collaboration with Hans J. Wegner. Carl Hansen & Søn took over the series production of the CH24 Wishbone Chair (1950), which is still produced today in unchanged construction, as well as further Wegner chairs (CH22, CH25, CH26, CH28). Later came designs by Børge Mogensen, Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen, Mogens Koch and Naoto Fukasawa. The entire Wegner portfolio rests with Carl Hansen today, complemented by Kjærholm steel furniture (since 2013, after acquiring the Kjærholm rights).

Characteristic is the consistent use of solid oak, ash, beech, walnut and teak, combined with hand-woven paper cord or leather covering. On the vintage market, early CH24 editions from before 1990 with the old Carl Hansen brand mark are especially sought after, as are Mogensen sofas from the 60s and 70s. When you examine a piece, look for the burned-in Carl Hansen logo, original paper cord weaving (it patinates brown) and stamped model numbers.
